In her series “Shopping” (1997-1999), Merry Alpern turns a hidden lens on the performative rituals of luxury retail - high‑end department stores, fitting rooms, and shopping galleries become stages for gestures of desire, hesitation and surveillance. By photographing anonymous shoppers through discreet cameras, she exposes the subtle choreography of consumer culture: the tension between private impulse and public display within spaces framed by wealth and voyeurism.
